Those who would use the phrases \u003cem style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"\u003e“I am a mistake”, “I am wrong, flawed, dark to the core”,\u003c\/em\u003e \u003cem style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"\u003e“You could never help me, I am too broken”.\u003c\/em\u003e Mostly because they didn’t believe they deserved help or support, and that all the hardship, trauma they had endured in their life, and having no one care about them, believe in them, and give up on them simply meant it was their fault and they were worth nothing. While this always breaks my heart hearing such testaments from people experiencing it, it also drove me to think outside the square as a clinical psychologist in ways I could help them realise, they are worth being cared for. They do deserve a life with transformative change. Change in ways they are feeling hope, wellness, and hope. I could see early on the basic psychotherapy and education around principals of CBT were just not enough to help really complex clients such as those with Borderline Personality Disorder, Complex PTSD, Bipolar Disorder, and quite frankly anyone who had experienced a lot of adversity in their life and had been let down many times. This workbook was created to challenge the negative beliefs they carry so far down. But importantly, offer them a better rationale then simply words of affirmation. It wasn’t enough to simply tell them they were worth it. I had to show them. I find with many clients how carry such complexity and trauma, when you can offer them an explanation to what they have experienced in a way that removes the blame to themselves or others, and rather conveys their story in a scientific neuroplasticity manner, it suddenly shifts their perspective. They start to learn ‘they’ are not fundamentally flawed; the story they have lived is what was flawed. Hence, this workbook is designed to spark that initial conversation with individuals who have given up on themselves, and invite them to consider an alternative explanation. Then to start very gently exploring ways to begin the process of finding meaningful change in their mind, body and life. Neurons are a collection of tiny cells in the brain which are responsible for all information transmission throughout your body, and essentially, they make us behave, think and act in a certain way based on the information stored in them. If you do nothing to challenge the neurons in your mind, you will for the most part wake up each day feeling the same, acting the same, and not feel capable of being any different. When people arrive in therapy with a psychologist, what they mostly want is help to feel and behave differently. In a way that brings them joy, fulfilment, success and ultimate mind-body wellness. And so, our job as a psychologist is to help them build new neurons to do so.
