You know that moment when students finish their task early and you’re left juggling small groups and managing interruptions? This resource gives early writers structured, developmentally appropriate practise for pencil control, letter formation, and sound–letter connections (so students are engaged while you teach).
Draw It, Write It is a developmentally appropriate Foundation literacy resource designed for the very beginning of the school year, when students are building pencil control, learning to form letters, and beginning to connect sounds to letters.
Created with early years learners in mind, this resource focuses on the foundational skills needed for successful handwriting and early phonics (without overloading students or requiring constant teacher support).
Why this resource works:
In the first weeks and months of Foundation, students need repeated opportunities to:
- develop fine motor control
- practise correct letter formation
- rehearse sound–letter connections orally
This resource intentionally combines drawing, explicit letter formation practise, and grapheme–phoneme correspondence in a simple, predictable format that supports routine, confidence, and skill development. Clear visual prompts help students understand what to do, allowing the task to become familiar and manageable over time.

How I like to use this:

- small group instruction
- rotations
- early intervention
- follow-up or consolidation after explicit teaching
While the layout supports increasing familiarity and independence, teachers remain in control of how and when the resource is introduced and used.
If you’re…
- trying to support early writers who are still developing pencil control while also teaching sounds and letters
- navigating those early weeks of Foundation, where routines are forming and students are all at very different finishing points
- looking for meaningful literacy tasks that don’t overload students or feel developmentally inappropriate
- balancing small groups, rotations, and intervention and need something purposeful students can work through
