• Exploring how Earth has changed over time
• Developing scientific comprehension note taking and diagram skills
Aligned to the Australian Curriculum v9 Science for Year 3 and Year 4, this resource supports student understanding of how Earth changes over time and uses fossils as evidence of past living things, helping build foundational knowledge of natural processes in an engaging and accessible way.
What is included and what is on each page?
There are two pages full of information and content for students to read through. These pages are visually appealing for children with fun clipart and easy to read fonts. The following content is explained over these pages:
- What are fossils?
- Why are they important?
- How are they used?
- What are palaeontologists?
- What do they do and why?
- What are some different types of fossils?
- Why might we use these different types of fossils? (body fossils, carbon fossils, trace fossils and pseudo fossils)
The next two pages provide comprehension questions asking the reader to refer back to the texts to find information and take notes in their own words. This helps them to really go through the information to gain an understanding of what they are reading, helping them to transfer this knowledge into their long term memory - rather than just reading it once and being done with it!
Following this, is a quiz worksheet with specific questions about fossils, all of the answers to which can be found in the first two information based worksheet pages.
There is a cut and paste sorting activity where students sort facts about fossils into a table. There are two simple columns - true and not true. All of the true facts will be found within the initial two pages, no need to do more research to cover anything on any of the worksheets included!
A fun worksheet follows this, prompting students to draw pictures/diagrams of a fossil is also included. This is great to use as a display in the classroom or fun art/craft activity to match the topic!
The final worksheet in this set provides a template for students to record key details and facts about fossils as a summary of their learning, to help them revise everything to transfer it to their long term memory and also determine if your learners grasped the topic and are ready to move on. Your students will love this packet as much as you will - save valuable time, just print and have everything for your lessons ready to go.
Answer sheets are included for the cut/paste table worksheet and quiz worksheet, making it really quick and easy to mark! You could even use these worksheets as revision pages, teacher reference pages when teaching the concept or to display on the board and have students self-check their work, especially for the table cut and paste worksheet.
