Mastery-based multiplication fluency program for facts 0–12.
If motivating students to practise their multiplication fluency has you pulling your hair out, this resource was designed for you. Karate Math has instant student buy-in and, once established, quickly becomes student-driven.
Karate Math is a structured multiplication fluency program where students progress through a belt system, mastering multiplication facts from 0–12. I’ve used this resource for years with Year 2 and Year 3, making small tweaks along the way to get it running seamlessly.
Students have gone from groans to genuine motivation, choosing to practise their multiplication facts during early finisher time and even at home because they’re determined to pass their next karate belt
✪ How It Works:
- Students complete a one-minute belt check daily, or as suited to your classroom.
- Students move to the next level once multiplication facts are answered correctly.
- After completing four levels within a belt colour, students progress to the next belt.
- Progress is celebrated with certificates and optional visual tracking.
✪ Multiplication Skills:
- Multiplication fluency facts 0–12
- Review and consolidation with mixed multiplication

My WHY for Karate Math:
After noticing students disengaging during fluency activities, a colleague and I brainstormed ways to better motivate our students to engage with their fluency practice. This is when Karate Math was born. I wanted a system that motivated students without constant reminders or pressure, and that didn’t add extra work to an already busy day.
It’s a system I’ve used year after year, refining it through many versions to find what works best. Even without the displays, students buy into it completely. They remind me when it’s time, practise during early finisher time, and often choose to work on their belts at home because they’re determined to pass each level.
