What if your fine motor centre could:
✔ build hand strength
✔ reinforce initial sounds
✔ spark phonemic awareness conversations
✔ run independently
✔ and require almost no prep
That’s exactly why I created these Alphabet Loose Parts Mats
After explicitly teaching initial sounds through oral language, movement and shared exploration, I needed something students could move into independently (without losing the play-based, hands-on pedagogy that actually works in early years classrooms).
I didn’t want worksheets.
I didn’t want disconnected busy work.
And I definitely didn’t want another activity that required hours of preparation.
I wanted something intentional, and fun.
These hands-on, play-based mats are designed to strengthen fine motor development while deepening phonemic awareness through meaningful sound exploration and conversation.
Students use loose parts (think: buttons, natural materials, counters, colourful wooden pieces and maths manipulatives) to engage with six carefully selected images per letter that align with initial phonics instruction. Bring them in as you introduce sounds or just for fun in any order you wish!
Instead of separating “fine motor time” and “literacy time,” these mats intentionally combine both.
This resource works beautifully for:
• Foundation / Kindergarten
• First year of school / Year 1
• Play-based and inquiry classrooms
• Literacy rotations
• Morning tubs
• Small group practise
• Fast finishers
• Fine motor centres that genuinely connect to curriculum
✨ What This Resource Includes:
• 156 print-and-go pages
• Every letter of the alphabet (A–Z)
• 6 unique, initial-sound aligned images per letter
• Clear, student-friendly layouts to promote independence
• Designed specifically for use with loose parts and manipulatives
• Truly no prep: print onto card or slip into a document sleeve and go
• and the best part? I've included a printing guide so you can just print what you need without writing down all the pages... AND I've kept it clickable so you can click and go to the letters you're after!
When I began using these mats, I noticed:
• Fine motor practise became purposeful rather than separate
• Students naturally engaged in phonemic awareness conversations while building
• Independent literacy time felt calm, structured and meaningful
• Small groups ran smoothly without extra preparation (not to mention - they did LOVE it)
These mats combine play-based learning, hands-on exploration and fine motor development with explicit phonemic awareness instruction in a way that feels authentic to early years classrooms.
If you’ve been looking for a way to strengthen early literacy foundations while honouring how young learners actually learn, then this resource was created for you.
