Brave (2012) Movie Study Guide | Comprehension, Analysis & Vocabulary

Brave (2012) is an animated fantasy-adventure that follows Merida, a determined Scottish princess who wants the freedom to choose her own future. When an attempt to change her fate leads to unexpected magical consequences, Merida must take responsibility for her choices and work to repair her relationship with Queen Elinor. Through its mix of adventure, family conflict, humor, and personal growth, the film gives students meaningful opportunities to explore courage, responsibility, identity, family relationships, traditions, choices, consequences, and different perspectives.

This movie guide is designed for students in Grades 5–12 and offers a more analytical alternative to a traditional question-only movie guide. Students follow the story from beginning to end while working with prediction, chronological comprehension, character development, cause and effect, theme, scene analysis, vocabulary, real-world connections, and reflection.

Activities include:

• Before You Watch: Predict & Prepare – Students make predictions about the story, characters, possible conflicts, and themes before viewing.

• Story Tracker: Beginning → Middle → End – Students organize the main events of the movie and track how the conflict develops and is resolved.

• Character Evidence File – Students investigate a character’s traits, goals, weaknesses, turning point, choices, and growth using evidence from the movie.

• Cause, Choice & Consequence – Students examine important decisions and connect each choice to its consequence.

• Theme & Message Lab – Students identify a strong theme, support it with evidence, and explain the message they think the movie communicates.

• Scene Investigator – Students closely examine one important scene, including what happens, emotions, character evidence, and its impact on the story.

• Think Beyond the Movie – Students make real-world connections, consider another character’s point of view, explore an alternative outcome, and identify an important lesson.

• Final Movie Challenge – Students summarize the movie, choose a favourite character and scene, rate the film, and reflect on the experience.

• Vocabulary Word Search – Students locate 20 movie-related vocabulary words taken from the film script.

• Vocabulary Match – Students match key movie vocabulary with randomized definitions and apply selected words in context.

• Suggested Answer Key – Includes model responses and acceptable-answer guidance for the analytical activities.

The activities are structured so teachers can use the resource during viewing, after the movie, for independent work, small-group discussion, homework, homeschool lessons, or a complete film study. Because many of the questions are evidence-based and open-ended, teachers can also adjust the expected depth of student responses depending on grade level.

Rather than focusing only on recalling details, the guide encourages students to think about why characters make certain choices, how those choices affect the story, how relationships change, and what larger ideas the movie communicates.
