This week follows the Plate Tectonics theme. Students read a story about a probe travelling deep into Earth’s mantle, a recount of a first earthquake, a persuasive text about why scientists should keep an open mind, an informative text about plate boundaries and a description of the top of Mount Everest.
Every day has four short activities:
- Fix It! Students find and fix the mistakes in one sentence, then rewrite it correctly. The challenge changes every day.
- Word of the Day: Students find a new word in the day’s text, learn its meaning, then use it in a sentence of their own.
- Read It, Discuss It: The teacher reads the text aloud first, modelling fluency and expression. Partners then take turns reading it to each other and finish with an open-ended talk question.
- Free Writing: Ten uninterrupted minutes of writing, focused on ideas, not corrections.
Why it works:
- Themed weeks: each week follows one topic, building general knowledge.
- 5 text types: the text changes each day (narrative, recount, persuasive, informative, descriptive), and the free writing matches it, so students read a model before they write.
- Oral language every day: partner reading builds fluency, and the talk questions get every student explaining their thinking.
- Free writing: builds stamina and confidence. Students are corrected so often that many stop taking risks. This is their space to just get their ideas down.
