Mission to Space 3-Level Editing Challenge | Years 5–6 English | Differentiated for Mixed Abilities | Capitalisation, Punctuation, Apostrophes, Introductory Phrases | First ContactThe Zenith-X has reached the source of the deep-space signal. It's a massive alien beacon... and something is interfering with the transmissions.
Critical mission logs are being scrambled. Capitalisation is failing, punctuation is drifting, and communication with Mission Control is at risk. Students must stabilise the data stream before the connection is lost — working through three clearance levels, each one more challenging than the last.
Every student in the room works on the same mission. Each one works at the right level for them.
The Four Clearance Levels:
Level 1: Mission Cadet Foundational skills. Students repair corrupted transcripts using correct capital letters, sentence-ending punctuation, and basic commas.
Level 2: Mission Specialist Developing skills. Students apply all Level 1 skills plus commas in a series and apostrophes for contractions and possession.
Level 3: Flight Commander Advanced application. Students tackle all Level 2 skills plus introductory phrases, plural possessives, and more complex sentence structures.
Expedition Leader: Extension Task Fast finishers and above-year-level students go beyond editing to analyse the mission logs, use inference to understand what the crew is experiencing, and answer higher-order thinking questions about mood, character, and evidence. No extra prep required — it's built right in.
