Are you teaching Latin roots? Do you want to build your students understanding of morphology and how words work? These matrix word-building task cards show how words are built around high frequency Latin roots and affixes. They will give your students practice using morphemes to make multisyllabic words.
This resource contains printable task cards using matrices to build words. The resource includes 3 versions of the word-building activities with increasing complexity.
- The first set includes the completed matrix. Students make words and write word sums showing the combination of prefixes + base + suffixes.
- The second set requires students to complete the matrix using given word sums. The base is included in the matrix, and students use the word sums and words to identify the missing affixes.
- Finally, the most difficult set challenges students further to complete the matrix and word sums from a list of words. The matrix is blank in this set so students must be able to identify all morphemes in the words.
Each activity has a check for understanding embedded.
These morphology activity task cards are best suited to students in years 4, 5 and 6 who have already had morphology instruction in identifying morphemes and writing word sums.
