Roll, Slide, Stop!
An early learning inquiry resource bundle
What makes things move?
A ball rolls down a ramp. A block slides, then stops. Another try brings a new question.
Roll, Slide, Stop! invites children to explore movement through playful encounters with large objects, low ramps and different surfaces.
Together, children and adults can notice what happens, follow a wondering, compare discoveries and try out new possibilities.
Created for early learning settings and home learning families, this coordinated bundle brings together an illustrated information magazine, a children’s inquiry journal and a practical Companion Guide.
What’s included?
Information magazine | 30 colour A4 portrait pages
A watercolour magazine exploring pushes and pulls, ramps, shapes, surfaces, gravity and friction through accessible language and illustrated examples.
Invitations to look closely, revisit a setup and change one thing help children connect information with their own explorations.

Sprout, Willow Wisp and Brainy accompany children as they collect questions, make predictions, record observations, compare surfaces, design a movement landscape and share discoveries.

Companion Guide | 12 colour A4 portrait pages
A welcoming guide for families and educators, with practical invitations, reflective prompts and clear page references connecting the magazine and journal.
Includes guidance for safe exploration, different ways to engage and responsive support through the Kind Connections Learning 5 Step Learning Implementation Flow.
66 pages across three coordinated PDF resources.
An inquiry that follows children’s curiosity
The bundle supports the six interconnected inquiry engagements:
Immersion: encounter movement and look closely.
Interest: notice what captures attention and collect questions.
Investigation: predict, explore, revisit and record.
Integration: compare observations and connect discoveries.
Imagination: design, test and adapt a movement landscape.
Inspire: share a discovery and listen to others.
Children can return to any engagement as their questions develop. There is no fixed timetable or expectation to complete every page.
Learning together
These experiences offer opportunities to practise observation, comparison, communication, planning and problem-solving. Children can explore changing ideas while adults support them to distinguish what they noticed from what they think might explain it.
Looking, pointing, talking, drawing, building and watching are all welcome ways to engage. The resources make room for children’s interests, comfort and pace, alongside reflection on the conditions and support adults provide.
Getting started
Gather a low, stable ramp, large objects and a few different surfaces. Begin with one invitation, then follow what the child notices.
Explore with close adult supervision. Choose objects too large to fit in a child’s mouth, keep the travel space clear and have an adult check and adjust the ramp.
Format: Three downloadable PDF files, A4 portrait.
Magazine and Companion Guide in colour; children’s journal in black and white. Australian English throughout.
This is a digital resource bundle. No physical materials are included.
Bring Roll, Slide, Stop! into your learning space and make room for the questions that grow from another try.
