You know that moment when students finish early and you’re trying to wrap up small groups without constant interruptions? I do too... all too well. I started making fast finisher packs that I could shuffle and reuse throughout the year (and then AGAIN in intervention groups) exactly for these moments.
This resource provides simple, structured phonological awareness practise that keeps students engaged in meaningful learning — independently — while you continue teaching. Say It, Circle It is a developmentally appropriate Foundation literacy resource designed to support early phonemic awareness from the very beginning of the school year, and to remain useful all the way through targeted intervention later on.
Created with early years learners in mind, this resource focuses on helping students hear, recognise, and work with sounds in words (without overloading them or requiring constant teacher support).
Why this resource works:
In the first weeks and months of Foundation, students need repeated opportunities to:
- hear and identify individual sounds
- practise oral sound recognition before formal reading and writing
- build confidence working independently after explicit teaching
- clear visual prompts support independence, allowing the task to become familiar and manageable over time (making it ideal for fast finishers, rotations, and intervention groups).
What’s REALLY included:
-
26 ready-to-use pages (one for each letter)
-
Low Prep format (Print-and-go with write-and-wipe sleeves)
-
Designed to be easily reordered to match your phonics sequence
-
Visual instructions on every page
- No writing demand, allowing students to focus on sound skill
- Suitable for whole class, small group, or intervention use
How I like to use this:
This resource is intentionally flexible and can be used across your Foundation literacy block, including:
- fast finisher activities
- small group instruction
- explicit teaching follow-up
- intervention groups
- literacy rotations
Because the routine stays consistent, students quickly learn what to do — supporting independence while you work with other students.
If you’re…
-
supporting students who are still learning to hear sounds in words
- navigating the early weeks of Foundation where routines are still forming
- looking for meaningful phoemic awareness practise without extra prep
- balancing small groups, rotations, and intervention
…then Say It, Circle It is designed to support you. It's providing simple, effective phonemic awareness practise that works from the start of the year through to targeted intervention.
