It’s the start of your literacy block, and you want those first ten minutes to actually teach something, not just keep students busy. That’s what these do.
Each set takes one skill a week and builds it across the week, a little more independent each day. The same calm routine runs Monday to Friday, so students spend their thinking on the skill, not on working out what a new worksheet is asking.
The weekly rhythm:
- Monday: the skill is taught explicitly, with worked examples that step through each move, then the class practises together.
- Tuesday: a quick recap and guided practice, then students begin on their own.
- Wednesday: independent practice.
- Thursday: students apply the skill to a topic from your current science or HASS unit.
- Friday: a short revision of the previous week’s skill, so every skill comes back a week later.
- Week 5 pulls all four skills together for revision.
What’s included:
- Project it on the board (students work in their notebooks) or print it. It’s your choice.
- The “Think it through” steps appear on every practice page, so students can work independently.
- Mapped to the Australian Curriculum v9, with the exact codes shown in the scope and sequence.
- Built-in spaced revision, so every skill is revisited twice across the set.
- Answers at the back, with every answer shown in blue, so marking takes seconds.
In this set: Set 4, Vocabulary & Word Meaning
Set 4 teaches students to choose words that say exactly what they mean, and suit the reader.
- Week 1, precise and academic vocabulary: students swap a vague word for a precise one in a sentence (make or produce? get or obtain?), then write their own sentence with the new word.
- Week 2, formal and informal register: students read who a sentence is written for, then replace the part that doesn’t suit the audience, whether it’s slang in a letter to the council or stiff, formal wording in a text to a friend.
- Week 3, idiomatic and figurative meaning: students use the rest of the sentence to work out what an idiom like back to square one really means, then say it in plain words.
- Week 4, word relationships and analogies: students complete analogies and name the link (antonyms, cause and effect, part and whole, a little and a lot), keeping the words in the same order.
- Week 5, revision: all four skills are revised.
This is for you if:
- You teach Year 6 English and want a calm, consistent daily routine in your literacy block.
- You’re a homeschool parent who wants ready-to-teach vocabulary work without designing it from scratch.
- You’d rather download and teach than spend your weekend planning.
Pair it with a novel study
